Most scientists agree that unsustainable fishing is one of the most significant threats to ocean ecosystems. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation believes that the market can play an important role in achieving marine conservation goals. Over the past decade, the Foundation has provided funding for non-profit groups to both enhance demand and build supply for environmentally-preferable seafood, including:

  • Independent certification of marine fisheries and eco-labeling seafood products from certified sources.
  • Raising awareness of seafood consumers and influencing their choices in the marketplace.
  • Forming business-environmental partnerships to bridge the gap between industry and information.
  • Persuading seafood market leaders to promote products from sustainable, well-managed fisheries.
  • Working with progressive industry leaders to enhance the effectiveness
of public advocacy for ocean conservation.

By creating financial incentives for the sustainable seafood industry to grow in new directions, the Sea Change Investment Fund, LLC represents another approach to meet the Packard Foundation’s conservation goals.

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is a private family foundation created in 1964 by David Packard (1912-1996), cofounder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, and Lucile Salter Packard (1914-1987).
