Funding Strategy
The Sea Change Investment Fund, LLC invests in seafood companies which help to expand the market for environmentally-preferable seafood by demonstrating that sustainable seafood is good business for the seafood industry and for investors. An integral part of Sea Change’s investment strategy is driving incremental environmental improvement in the sourcing and business practices of our portfolio companies.
At its worst, the seafood industry contributes the degradation of our oceans through:
- Damage to aquatic habitats through the use of destructive fishing gear, pollution, the introduction of invasive species or development;
- Mismanagement through overfishing of targeted stocks or a lack of regulatory oversight and enforcement;
- Wasteful use of marine resources from prolific bycatch or a dependence on the use of fishmeal and fish oil by aquaculture; and,
- Threats to species of special concern through accidental or intentional interactions with fisheries.
The Fund’s portfolio companies address this suite of problems by promoting seafood from environmentally-responsible sources or technological solutions. The Fund is advised by senior professionals in the conservation, seafood, finance and investment communities.
